While planning a honeymoon, one researches to find the best hotels, destinations, activities and experiences but often leaves out the most important part of the journey— The journey it self! Instead of booking those last minutes air tickets and getting crammed in a flight for long hours, enjoy a slow and scenic travel with these opulent trains.
Europe: The Orient Express
The Orient Express began its maiden voyage on 4 October 1883 at the Gare de Strasbourg (Today’s Gare de l’Est) in the presence of high-ranking politicians, journalists and writers. Despite the enthusiastic press coverage of that first journey, it was not until 1 June 1889 that the luxury sleeping-car service began operating a direct link to Constantinople, eliminating the need to change trains or take a steamer across the Bosphorus.
A timeless emblem of the Art of Travel, the Orient Express carried many notable celebrities, including American actress Marlene Dietrich, the adventurer Lawrence of Arabia, King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, and even spies such as the infamous Mata Hari. The mythical status of the Orient Express was further enhanced by books and films – most famously, Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, and the adventures of James Bond.
More trains were soon added to the service, all equally luxurious, to keep up with demand. A jewel of Art Nouveau, the Orient Express remains the most beautiful among them: travellers slept and dined royally on board, , and on arrival at the main destinations, they even found newly-built luxury hotels awaiting them.
Due to low cost airlines and newer, high speed trains, on 14 December 2009, the Orient Express ceased to operate and the route disappeared from European railway timetables. The Venice-Simplon Orient Express train, a private venture by Orient-Express Hotels Ltd (Now Belmond), using original CIWL carriages from the 1920s and 30s, continues to run from London to Venice and to other destinations in Europe, including the original route from Paris to Istanbul.
The train offers world-class comfort and culinary options in an yber luxurious set up.
